Progress in Pencil Recycling - Hokusei Pencil's Challenge
Hokusay Pencil has developed a technology to recycle sawdust generated during pencil production. Conventionally, about 40% of the boards were disposed of, but the company has turned this into a fine powder and utilized it as a new material called "Mokunensan. In cooperation with Nissin Engineering, the company is applying toner particle manufacturing technology to process sawdust and turn it into a clay-like material that can be used for pencil leads and other applications.
As of 2025, Hokusay Pencil will continue to sell "Mokunen-san" and educate the public about environmental awareness at its factory tour facility, Tokyo Pencil Lab. In addition, the company has developed "ignition wood," an igniter that utilizes sawdust, and offers it for bonfires and fireplaces. These efforts contribute to the effective use of resources and reduction of environmental impact, with the aim of realizing a sustainable society.
