The End of Human Disqualification: The Life of Osamu Dazai (1909-1948)
Osamu Dazai (1909-1948) was a Japanese novelist whose self-destructive lifestyle and relationships with women are strongly reflected in his works. Born into a wealthy family in Aomori, he was a student of debauchery and repeatedly attempted suicide. His masterpieces such as "Ningen Shikkaku" and "Shayo" depict self-denial, loneliness, and downfall, and have become a symbol of postwar literature.
In terms of his relationships with women, his attempted water suicide with Shimeko Tabe and his relationship with Shizuko Ota became the prototype for "Shayo". Finally, he and his mistress, Tomiei Yamazaki, committed suicide in Tamagawa-josui, and his life was over. His works are imbued with an aesthetics of destruction, and are still popular with many readers today.
