Lost in the Year 2008 A.D.: The Shadow of Marine One, the Missing Blueprint and the Drifting Crisis Summary

In 2008, classified blueprints for Marine One, the helicopter used by the President of the United States, were leaked. The cause was an employee of a defense contractor in Bethesda, Maryland, who stored the data on his home PC and used P2P file sharing software. As a result, the design data was discovered on a computer with an Iranian IP address, creating a serious national security issue.

When Computerworld reported the incident on March 2, 2009, the Pentagon was forced to review its information management system and tighten regulations on the use of P2P networks. The risk of information leaks in military companies and government agencies was highlighted, and the management of sensitive data was tightened.

The incident also affected the safety of Marine One, based on the Sikorsky VH-3D, and accelerated the introduction of its successor, the VH-92A. 2024 will see the completion of the VH-92A deployment, and the VH-3D is scheduled for retirement.
