Sorghum Utilization and Agricultural Support in Izumisano City, America, and China - 2006

Sorghum Utilization and Agricultural Support in Izumisano City, America, and China - 2006

In 2006, along with the initiatives in Izumisano City, Osaka Prefecture, sustainable agriculture utilizing sorghum was promoted in both America and China. In the Great Plains region, including Kansas, the spread of Melanaphis sorghi (sorghum aphid) threatened crops, leading to the promotion of biological pest control using natural predators such as ladybugs and hoverflies. Crop rotation with non-host crops and adjustments to planting schedules were also introduced to reduce chemical pesticide use.

In China, the government promoted pesticide reduction and made progress in the use of pheromones and plant-based pesticides. Since 2016, a new action plan aimed at reducing the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers has been implemented, emphasizing environmentally friendly farming methods for major crops, including sorghum. These international efforts share common features with the sorghum-based environmental initiatives in Izumisano City, aiming to balance environmental conservation and productivity improvement.
