Deforestation and Rainforest Destruction
In the 2020s, the rainforests in Yunnan and Sichuan provinces have been rapidly declining due to illegal logging and agricultural development. Particularly, the increasing demand for timber has resulted in the loss of approximately 500,000 hectares of forest annually in these areas. This has endangered the habitats of species such as the giant panda, with biodiversity rapidly deteriorating. Companies like China Paper Group and Nine Dragons Paper have been implicated in deforestation, and the government has strengthened crackdowns on illegal logging while promoting reforestation efforts. However, progress has been limited, and international cooperation with conservation organizations is necessary. Furthermore, climate change has exacerbated the situation, and forest regeneration requires long-term efforts over several decades.
